Human error cited in NY metro derailment

A train derailed at a subway station in New York City on Tuesday, injuring at least 34 people, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and media reports.

Fire officials say 34 people have suffered non-life-threatening-injuries from a Harlem subway derailment that frightened passengers and resulted in system-wide delays.

In May, the MTA said "decades of underinvestment" in maintaining the overall subway infrastructure was leading to delays and disruptions.

MacKrell then tweeted about the evacuation, saying: 'Folks calmed quickly and within 5 minutes MTA personelle were clearing passengers forward onto the 125 platform.

The No. 1 train prepares to leave the South Ferry Station, Tuesday June 27, 2017, in NY. Service along the B and C lines were knocked out, as well as large portions of the A and D lines. The subway station was subsequently evacuated. He said he didn't know yet if a passenger had pulled the emergency brake.

Passengers on one train tell WABC that it felt like it jumped off the tracks at around 125th Street.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says two supervisors have been suspended while officials investigate a Harlem derailment that injured more than 30 people.

Global ransomware attack causes chaos
EternalBlue was in a batch of hacking tools leaked earlier this year that are believed to have belonged to the U.S. IT experts have identified the virus as "Petrwrap" - a modified version of the Petya ransomware that hit in 2016.

In addition to the nearly 40 that were injured, about 500 people were forced to evacuate and walk through the smoke-filled tunnels to safety.

Passengers posted photos and video on social media as they walked through the tunnel with no light.

Cox said smoke started coming in from one end of the vehicle.

One train line is still suspended and several others are running on modified routes through much of the system as the agency works to fix the tracks at the site of the derailment at 125th Street and St. Nicholas.

"Storing equipment in between tracks is a common practice employed by railroads across the country to accelerate rail repairs", Lhota and Hakin said in the joint statement. Lhota said the emergency braking system on the train triggered, but it wasn't immediately clear why. He said there was white smoke and "there was a lot of banging around in that vehicle - it was really bad".

The panic was caused by the smoke which filled the tunnel.

The number of subway delays has tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month. In April, a power outage backed up trains around the city and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.
