What is next for the Senate health care bill?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to provide more time to make changes to the bill to try to persuade reluctant GOP senators to vote for the measure.

As of Tuesday afternoon, five Republican senators - enough to block a procedural motion to move forward with the bill - said they would oppose the motion barring changes to the plan.

Republican defections increased after Congress's budget referee said on Monday the measure would leave 22 million more people uninsured by 2026 than Mr Obama's 2010 statute.

Republicans originally planned for the Senate to vote on the healthcare bill later this week, hoping to prevent the potential loss of momentum that could come with waiting until after the holiday.

Republican senators were meeting Tuesday afternoon at the White House to to discuss the next steps.

"But I also think we may not know if we have the votes to pass it until we bring it up", said No. 3 GOP Senate leader John Thune of South Dakota.

When Trump first launched his candidacy for president, he made it clear that he wanted everyone covered even if it was the un-republican thing to do.

After six weeks, members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and the moderate Tuesday Group reached a compromise, allowing the bill to squeak through the lower chamber 217-213, with no Democrats voting for it. Shelley Moore Capito are the latest Republicans to say that they oppose the bill.

Ryan told reporters on Tuesday: "I would not bet against Mitch McConnell".

From North Carolina to Nevada, front pages featured the news that 22 million Americans would lose health insurance by 2026 and that Medicaid would be cut by almost $800 billion under the proposed Obamacare-replacement law.

Senator McConnell said the White House was anxious to help write legislation that could pass the Senate. The CBO estimates that 22 million fewer Americans would be uninsured under the bill and by 2026, the number of uninsured would rise to 49 million. After the CBO report's release, he was joined by Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Susan Collins of ME and Mike Lee of Utah in saying they would refuse to bring the bill to the Senate floor.

McConnell is struggling to appease two factions in his party. He's been aiming at winning Senate passage this week, before a weeklong July 4 recess that leaders worry opponents will use to weaken support for the legislation. Conservatives said the bill does not do enough to erase Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature domestic legislation. Pence, meeting with conservative senators tonight, is playing a more hands-on role.

"This bill is every bit as mean as the House bill", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

McConnell wants to win Senate passage this week.

Before the Senate can begin debate on most legislation, the senators must either unanimously agree to consider it or the majority leader must offer a "motion to proceed" to consideration of that bill.
