Tunisian govt hopes that days of food protests are subsiding

In an update to its travel advice for the country, the FCO said there had been protests in several towns and cities across Tunisia, with some reports of violence.

Groups of young people, some masked, threw rocks at a police station and were met by volleys of tear gas, and had running scuffles through nearby streets, witnesses said.

Political unrest in Tunisia has the potential to reverberate outside its borders.

"People have to understand that the situation is extraordinary and their country is having difficulties, but we believe that 2018 will be the last hard year for the Tunisians", he told reporters on Tuesday, adding that while demonstrations are acceptable, violence is not.

The number of those detained in the ongoing protests in Tunisia has risen to 778 after 151 people were arrested on Thursday, Interior Ministry spokesman Khalifa Chibani has announced. At least 237 were arrested and 49 policemen wounded as violence continued to sprawl through the country for a second night. He said people who were arrested had taken part in theft, looting and arson.

The Popular Front said its leaders had been targeted in a political campaign that was "reproducing the methods of the oppressive Ben Ali regime".

There was also a protest turning violent in the capital, residents said.

They're vowing to stay on the streets and actually increase their protests until the government eases their tax load.

Opposition forces have called for halting the implementation of the 2018 budget and rolling back on austerity measures by the government and vowed to escalate the rallies in the coming days.

The North African country has been hailed for its relatively smooth democratic transition since a 2011 revolt that sparked the Arab Spring uprisings, but seven years after the revolution, tensions over economic grievances are high. Tunisian politicians were awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize for achieving non-violent change.

The protests are much smaller compared to previous turmoil seen in Tunisia since the overthrow of autocrat ruler Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.
