'Betrayed' Pakistan army chief won't ask for further United States aid

Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party rules Pakistan's Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KPK) province, which borders Afghanistan, as part of a coalition government that includes the religious Jamaat-e-Islami party.

Chairman Imran Khan said on Saturday that meeting US President Donald Trump would be a "bitter pill" to swallow should he become the prime minister in elections later this year, but added, "I would meet him".

He said the policy is to be blamed for terrorist attacks that have killed tens of thousands of Pakistanis over the past decade while the national economy has suffered billions of dollars in losses.

In a press briefing, Khan, who has an global reputation as a ladies man and at home is seen more as a religious conservative, said he has been a staunch opponent of Pakistan's participation in the war on terror since it began in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.

US troops have been in the country ever since, supporting the government in Kabul's fight against the Taliban and other insurgents, including Islamic State (IS).

After hints dropped by Foreign Office spokesman Dr. Muhammad Faisal on Thursday that the two sides were busy in talks away from media focus, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa received two telephone calls from US Centcom Commander, General Joseph Votel, and a US Senator on Friday expressing optimism that the current turbulence in relations would be a temporary phenomenon.

A senior Trump administration official has said the USA is developing risk mitigation plan, given the past experience that Pakistan blocks ground lines of communication as retaliatory measure. The military aid is a suspension and not a cutoff for Pakistan.

Pakistan's politics have been in turmoil since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resigned in July 2017 aftrer being hit with corruption charges.
