Canada PM Justin Trudeau condemns attack on Muslim girl in Toronto

Khawlah Noman speaks to reporters with her mother at her school after she told police that a man cut her hijab with scissors in Toronto Ontario Canada Jan. 12 2018

After the attack, Noman told local reporters that she was scared to walk to school.

Noman told reporters gathered at the school on Friday afternoon, that she felt "confused, scared and terrified" when seeing the man behind her and that she is now afraid to walk to class.

Authorities are investigating this as a hate crime.

Speaking at his cabinet's retreat in London, Ont., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident "troubling".

"My heart goes out to the young girl who was attacked, seemingly for her religion. Canada is an open and welcoming country, and incidents like this can not be tolerated", tweeted Trudeau on Friday.

Addressing her attacker, the girl said: "What you're doing is really wrong, you should not act like this, and especially, I'm a kid".

Khawlah and her 10-year-old brother, Mohammed, ran away from the man to join a group of children so they would not be alone with him, but became separated at the traffic lights. We followed this crowd of people to be safe.

"Sadly, someone insulted me by cutting my hijab two times", she said.

The man is said to be in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black trousers. Police did not have anyone in custody.

Stadium memories differ for Ohio State, Southern Cal
They are led by their sophomore quarterback Sam Darnold who through the ball for 3,787 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 picks. The Trojans' 52-49 win over No. 5 Penn State in the Rose Bowl was at least one of the best two postseason games of the year.

Toronto police are treating the incident as a hate crime but have yet to make any arrests.

"This is shocking to learn of this assault".

A spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board said the school where the student belongs is multicultural and inclusive.

Remarkably, Premier Wynne was prompted to tweet that this was "a cowardly act of hatred, and it has no place in Ontario".

This news has heightened pressure on Canadian governments to take further action against attacks on Muslims.

The attack comes as Canada approaches the first anniversary of a deadly shooting in a Quebec City mosque that killed six people at prayer.

A French-Canadian student was arrested and charged for the massacre on January 29th.

The incident happened over a month after a judge in Quebec Province suspended a newly-passed provincial law banning the wearing of face veil or niqab by Muslim women while giving or receiving public services.

Moreover, a survey carried out past year by Ontario's Human Rights Commission further found that more people reported harboring "very negative" feelings about Muslims than about any other group.
