Hospital Dumps Patient Wearing Only a Gown at Bus Stop in Cold

The University of Maryland Medical Center in downtown Baltimore

The situation left Baraka stunned, believing that, due to possible mental health issues, the hospital made a decision to discharge her instead of involuntarily committing her to a psych ward. Or why she was left out in the cold near a public transit bus stop.

The viral video of a recently discharged patient being left outside in the cold wearing only a paper gown sparked an investigation at the Maryland hospital where she received treatment. At one point, one of the security guards, probably annoyed by the man's insistence, told Baraka to talk to his supervisor. When asked about this Karen Lancaster, a spokeswoman for the University of Maryland Medical System, said "patient privacy regulations restrict us from providing any details".

This astonishing neglect led Baraka to confront to the guards asking them if they "are just going to leave" the underdressed woman outside before captioning his eventual post with "is this what healthcare in Baltimore City has come to?"

Recalled Baraka, "I said, 'Are you kidding me, they just dumped her on the curb'". It confirmed that the woman was discharged Tuesday night from the emergency department, and said the "unfortunate event" is "not representative" of its "patient-centered mission".

One of the staff members responded cryptically, suggesting they had no other choice, "due to the circumstances of what happened".

He posted the disturbing videos on Facebook.

In a video (below) shared by CBS News, Imamu Baraka can be heard calling after employees outside of the University of Maryland Medical Center's Midtown Campus.

Hospital Dumps Patient Wearing Only a Gown at Bus Stop in Cold

A Maryland hospital is under fire after a bystander took footage showing a woman who had apparently been discharged from the hospital wearing only a gown and socks. "You can do better".

The mother of the patient says her daughter is 22-years-old and had been missing. She screams and gestures toward her face, but doesn't say anything.

"At first I was shocked".

He then called an ambulance who took her back to the hospital she had just been kicked out off, he said. In the Facebook post accompanying the video, Baraka wrote that the visibly distressed woman was being watched by four hospital security guards, one of them leaning of an empty wheelchair.

The staff of Maryland University's Medical System is now investigating an alleged patient care misconduct.

"This kind of behavior is, I think, both illegal and I'm sure immoral", said Arthur L. Caplan, founding head of the division of medical ethics at the New York University School of Medicine. Hospitals must transfer patients they can't stabilize. "I'm going to call and get you some help".

"We are taking this matter very seriously, conducting a thorough review, and are evaluating the appropriate response, including the possibility of personnel action", they concluded.
