Trump's education secretary struggles to answer basic questions on schools

How the White House Plans to 'Harden' US Schools

Though DeVos was sworn in to her Cabinet position 13 months ago, she stumbled her way through a pointed "60 Minutes" interview with CBS' Lesley Stahl Sunday night and was unable to defend her belief that public schools can perform better when funding is diverted to the expansion of public charter schools and private school vouchers.

"I don't know. Overall, I, I can't say overall that they have all gotten better", said DeVos, who at Stahl's suggestion, agreed that maybe she should visit some struggling MI schools.

STAHL: Now, has that happened in MI?

"I had never watched "60 Minutes" before, but I can tell you this, I will never watch it again", the Education Secretary said. Stahl responded, referencing DeVos' home state.

DeVos gave a similar answer when asked about her department's consideration of rolling back another Obama-era rule aimed at preventing discriminatory discipline - in other words, guidelines that make sure schools don't punish students of color more than their white classmates.

"Dear President Trump, if you want to meet someone who has an actual IQ problem (as opposed to just being black), meet your Education Secretary Betsy DeVos", Huffman tweeted.

DeVos: I can't say overall that they have all gotten better.

Maybe try to figure out what they're doing?' Stahl asked, continuing to press her.

"Why take away money from that school that's not working to bring them up to a level where they are - that school is working?"

The Frenchman said, as quoted by Leicester Mercury : "It was a good opportunity and a fantastic goal". It was different players, different change from the last game. "It is a good feeling for us".

"Maybe I should", DeVos then said when Stahl suggested she visit those schools. Still, they provide a rough look at how MI kids are doing, and it sure looks like they're doing steadily better in public schools but not in charter schools.

And it didn't end there.

At one point she even admitted to correspondent Leslie Stahl that "I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming'".

'Have you seen the really bad schools?

"Here's what we shared with '60 Minutes, ' which of course they didn't show you: MI, like much of the nation, isn't doing well enough to prepare students".

"This is about exactly her purview here, and she couldn't answer those basic questions and she also contradicted herself repeatedly", Collins said.

DEVOS: Maybe I should. Yes. The awkward, at-times rambling interview covered issues from gun violence to school choice and her proposed Title IX reforms regarding campus sexual assaults.

DEVOS: Sometimes it does.

"Arguably, all of these issues or all of this issue comes down to individual kids", Devos said, to which Stahl replied, "Well, no ... it's not". "But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved".
