MI5 spy boss warns Russian Federation is seeking to split Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied all involvement in the Skripal poisoning case but MI5 chief Andrew Parker is set to publicly blame him

MI5 chief Andrew Parker will warn of twin threats from Islamic State and Russian Federation, in a landmark speech to European security chiefs in Berlin, where he will also stress the importance of post-Brexit security ties.

Yulia has been released but Sergei Skripal is still recovering.

In December last year, Parker had revealed that nine terrorist attacks had been prevented by the UK's security services and police since 52-year-old Khalid Masood drove a vehicle into pedestrians before launching a knife attack after crashing into the side of the Parliament, killing five people on March 22 last year.

In particular, Parker pointed to Russian Federation, which has been accused of attempting to poison former spy Sergei Skripal in a state-sponsored attack in Salisbury, UK, in March of this year.

"It was only through near-miraculous medical intervention that his and his daughter's lives were saved, and wider preventive action was able to be taken". It has been the subject of condemnation and diplomatic sanctions from the West over its alleged involvement.

Mr Parker said the Russian government was the "chief protagonist" trying to undermine European democracies with "malign activities" adding that the country risked becoming a more "isolated pariah".

He criticised Russia's invasion of Crimea and its alleged interference in Western elections.

He also criticised Russia's actions after the incident in Wiltshire.

One of the UK's most senior spymasters will use a rare public intervention on Monday to warn Russian Federation that it risks becoming a "more isolated pariah" following the Salisbury nerve agent attack, according to the Financial Times (FT).

Police officers lay flowers in honor of the victims of the March 22 terror attack on the Westminster Bridge by the Houses of Parliament in central London on March 23, 2017.

He will stress that European intelligence partnerships have never been more crucial to combat the "intense and unrelenting worldwide terrorist threat" in parallel with growing aggression from hostile activity by states.

The MI5 chief stressed that the "sustained global focus" was required to defeat the Daesh* terrorist group, which has claimed multiple attacks in Europe and elsewhere in the last few years, even though the group has suffered significant losses in the Middle East. As I speak today, they are seeking to regroup, and the threat seems likely to persist.
